Lake Superior is also known as a great Salmon and Trout fishery.  Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon and Pink Salmon are all abundant in Lake Superior.  Water flows into Lake Superior from many small rivers and streams providing great fishing for shore anglers.  Fishing on the St. Mary's river for Salmon is usually excellent in the fall.  Trout fishing on Lake Superior is also strong for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Steelhead Trout and Lake Trout.

Lake Superior Fishing Report

Lower Shore-Duluth to Twin Points: Fishing pressure was moderate a the Duluth Charter Dock, light at other Duluth area stations and moderate from Knife River to Twin Points. Fishing was good on the Lower Shore this week. Duluth area anglers had good success catching lake trout about a mile offshore at the Lester River and the Lakewood Pumphouse. Anglers also had found good lake trout fishing off Stoney Point, Larsmont, and over the reefs at Two Harbors and Twin Points. Most of the lake trout were caught in 100 to 150 feet of water, suspended in the water column. The lake trout averaged between 20 and 24 inches, although our clerk also measured several lake trout from 26 to 30 inches. Our clerk observed a single Chinook salmon from the Duluth area which was caught at about 25 feet over 200 feet of water. Several coho salmon were caught at locations near Knife River. Water temperature was in the upper 40s to low 50s. To date, we have captured 24 Chinook salmon, 3 coho salmon, 57 pink salmon, 1 brown trout and 1 unclipped steelhead in the pool at the mouth of the French River and in the French River Trap. At the Knife River trap, we have seen 14 unclipped steelhead, 4 clipped steelhead, 7 brown trout, 4 Chinook salmon, 1 coho salmon and 10 pink salmon.

Upper Shore-Silver Bay to Hovland: Fishing pressure was moderate at Grand Marais and light at other Upper Shore stations. Grand Marais anglers reported slow fishing for lake trout. Most of the lake trout were caught in deep water and were in the 16 to 22 inch range. Some larger lake trout, in the 25 to 32 inch range, were caught in shallower water nearer to shore. Anglers reported that salmon catches were down. A few Chinook salmon in the 17 to 21 inch range were reported. Anglers have caught moderate numbers of pink salmon in the 16 to 18 inch range in the Brule and Devil Track rivers. We have not heard of Chinook salmon in Upper Shore rivers. However, water levels are still high and the water remains turbid, making it difficult to spot the fish. Water temperatures were in the mid- to upper 40s.
